A unique dragon stone was discovered in the territory of Goris by the efforts of Armenian-German archaeologists. The stone greatly differs from the ones that were found here before. The director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, member of the “Historians Association of Armenia” Pavel Avetisyan stated that the dragon stones found in various parts of the Armenian Highlands were sculptured.
“The stone discovered in the territory of Goris a few days ago is also sculpted, but this one is exceptional because no such samples have been found here so far. Dragon stones are unique examples of monumental sculpture of the Armenian Highland and date back to the 3rd millennium BC. They are mapped only in the Armenian Highland, and can’t be found anywhere else”, — said P. Avetisyan adding that stone monuments are unique manifestations of the identity and culture of the people of that time. |
